Argyll, United Kingdom. 2023

Found within low lying walls of a former croft by the coast, with views south down the Kilbrannan sound and the Corbetts on the Isle Arran’s North. Replacing the Existing Cross buildings with a modern, low energy dwelling, based upon an existing Caber House design, with additional bespoke garage and studio to the east, connected with a generous, light filled entrance hallway and covered entrance patio that blends into the existing wall.

Whilst light and open on the ground floor, the dwelling was designed to allow for complete enclosure through the use of external shuttering, which both allows for full privacy and security and is also fundamental to the solar shading strategy.

The external cladding has been designed to blend in with the existing rubble walls using natural stone slips - using stone from the existing cross - on the ground floor and lighter timber cladding for the upper floor and traditional slate roof to be in keeping with the local characteristics.

Design Completed whilst working with Architeco and Caber House, July 2023.

As part of this project, new roads were required. This was completed with the assistance of topographical surveys before the design process.

As part of ongoing renovations to the existing dwelling, I was tasked with the redevelopment of the existing freestanding kitchen and utility room to the north-west of the house. By enlarging the existing doorway and the removal of the ceiling within the utility, the kitchen was moved to the utility. This allowed for additional skylights to brighten up the interior space with soft north-light, and an additional window facing north-east utilised the expansive vista overlooking the Firth of Clyde.

The Space was designed with a clean, yet traditional approach, allowing it to feel modern whilst entirely in keeping with the external traditional appearance of the dwelling. The dining space, originally the kitchen, had minimal additional architectural pieces added, to allow the clients collection of Charles Rennie Mackintosh inspired furnishings to flourish.
